Start-Up Readiness

Commissioning begins before the first motor starts

A disciplined start-up verifies that the plant is complete, clean, safe and aligned with the approved process before water, chemicals, biomass or production streams are introduced.

01 / COMPLETION

Mechanical Completion

Equipment installation, alignment, piping, supports, valves, access, drains, vents, labels and punch categorisation.

02 / POWER & CONTROLS

Electrical and Instrument Readiness

Insulation and continuity checks, motor rotation, calibration, loop checks, I/O verification, alarms and interlocks.

03 / UTILITIES

Utility Availability

Power, raw water, drains, instrument air, steam, cooling, chemicals, laboratory and safe disposal arrangements.

04 / DOCUMENTS

Approved Start-Up Basis

P&IDs, control philosophy, OEM instructions, chemical procedures, test formats, SOPs and emergency controls.

05 / PEOPLE

Team & Responsibility

Authorised operators, vendor representatives, EHS coverage, communication and escalation responsibilities.

06 / SAFETY

Start-Up Risk Control

PTW, LOTO, chemical handling, confined spaces, stored energy, temporary arrangements and abnormal-operation response.

First Equipment Cleaning
A new plant must be cleaned before it is expected to produce clean water or stable process performance.
Physical CleaningRemoval of debris, welding residue, dust, oil, packaging material and construction contamination.
Water FlushingLine-wise flushing with verified flow path, drains, strainers and acceptance of discharge clarity.
Chemical CleaningMetallurgy- and deposit-specific alkaline, acidic, detergent or specialist cleaning under an approved procedure.
DegreasingRemoval of fabrication oils and organic residue where necessary before service or passivation.
Membrane & Media PreparationPreservative removal, rinsing, loading checks, wetting and conditioning according to manufacturer requirements.
Post-Clean VerificationVisual inspection and relevant pH, conductivity, turbidity, cleanliness or rinse-end criteria.

Control requirement: Cleaning chemistry, concentration, temperature, circulation time and acceptance criteria must be selected for the metallurgy, lining, elastomers, membranes and OEM limits. Spent cleaning solution must be neutralised and disposed of through an approved route.

Chemical Passivation
Passivation is a controlled metallurgical treatment—not a generic chemical wash.
Stainless SteelCleaning, pickling or passivation sequence selected according to surface condition, weld contamination, grade and service requirement.
Carbon SteelProtective film formation or system-specific passivation for compatible closed circuits, boilers, cooling or process-water service.
Galvanised SurfacesControlled initial water chemistry and operating conditions to support protective-film development and reduce white-rust risk.
VerificationProcedure records, solution parameters, exposure time, rinse condition and acceptance inspection.
PreservationWet or dry preservation where start-up is delayed after cleaning or passivation.

Qualification: Passivation is undertaken only after compatibility and risk review. The final procedure must follow applicable metallurgy, equipment-manufacturer recommendations and site EHS requirements.

Commissioning Sequence

A controlled transition from equipment checks to process performance

01VerifyCompletion, punch and utilities
02Dry TestMotors, valves, logic and interlocks
03Wet TestFlows, pressure, leakage and hydraulics
