Advanced Oxidation for Difficult Organic Loads

Spark
Oxidiser

A high-energy oxidation concept that uses controlled local micro-discharges to create reactive conditions for transforming selected dissolved organic contaminants in industrial wastewater and contaminated condensate.

Conceptual ReactorMicro-discharges generate several treatment effects within one reaction zone.
O₃   UV   •OH   ΔP

Reactor internals, discharge energy, gas handling and hydraulic contact are selected for the specific wastewater.

High-EnergyShort local discharges create intense reaction conditions
Multi-EffectOzone, UV and pressure impulses may act together
TargetedBest suited to defined difficult organic contaminants
IntegratedUsed with separation, polishing and salt removal as required
Technology Position
Spark oxidation concentrates energy into local micro-events that can initiate oxidation and decomposition pathways unavailable to ordinary aeration or chemical dosing alone.

The source document describes local micro-sparks that produce ozone, ultraviolet radiation and micro-impulses of pressure. Together with reactive species generated in the liquid, these effects can attack susceptible dissolved organic compounds.

Spark oxidation does not remove every contaminant by the same mechanism. Some compounds may oxidise toward smaller intermediates, gases and mineral products. Others may require catalytic oxidation, adsorption, biological treatment or membrane polishing after the spark stage.

The technology should therefore be engineered around the target compound, wastewater matrix and required endpoint rather than positioned only by bulk COD.

Actual Reactor Arrangement

Vertical boiling-layer reaction chamber

The supplied cross-section shows the physical arrangement used to create controlled movement and repeated contact within the active reactor zone.

Upper DriveProvides mechanical movement to the central assembly.
Central ShaftTransfers rotation through the vertical reaction chamber.
Active LayerThe packed or boiling-layer zone provides a high-contact environment for local discharge and oxidation.
Liquid MovementInternal circulation repeatedly exposes the wastewater to the active treatment region.
Level ControlThe upper liquid level and outlet arrangement maintain the required reactor hold-up.
Bottom AssemblySupports mixing, distribution and the engineered discharge zone.

The final reactor geometry, media, drive, electrical arrangement and operating level must follow the tested design basis.

Simplified Mechanism

Energy transfer from discharge to contaminant

The sequence is conceptual. Actual species and reaction pathways depend on water chemistry, gas phase, discharge conditions and reactor construction.

Integrated Treatment Train

Spark oxidation works within a complete recovery process

The contaminated-condensate concept in the source document combines solids separation, spark oxidation, photocatalytic polishing, carbon protection and final demineralisation.

01Equalise & ConditionStabilise flow, pH, temperature and batch variation.
02AAB / DAFRemove suspended solids, oil, grease and associated organic load.
03Spark OxidiserTarget suitable volatile, semi-volatile and dissolved organic compounds.
04Catalytic OxidationPolish residual stable compounds with a validated oxidation process.
05Activated CarbonAdsorb remaining organic traces and protect downstream membranes or resin.
06Salt RemovalUse condensate polishing resin or high-recovery RO according to temperature and quality.
07Quality VerificationConfirm COD, BOD, turbidity, TDS and application-specific parameters.
08RecycleReturn qualified water to boiler-feed preparation or another approved use.
Mass balance requirement: oxidation changes organic compounds but does not by itself remove dissolved inorganic salts. Final TDS control requires a suitable polishing or membrane stage.

Engineering Basis

Discharge performance depends on the complete matrix

Target OrganicsIdentity, concentration, volatility, structure and required endpoint.
Water ChemistrypH, alkalinity, chloride, conductivity, salts and radical scavengers.
Physical LoadTSS, oil, grease, turbidity and free product entering the reactor.
DischargeVoltage, pulse or spark characteristics, frequency and energy delivery.

What Trials Must Establish

  • Parent-compound conversion and formation of intermediates.
  • COD, TOC and biodegradability response across the reaction time.
  • Specific energy consumption at the required endpoint.
  • Gas and residual control before downstream equipment.
  • Materials compatibility under oxidative and electrical conditions.
  • Cleaning and fouling behaviour of the reactor internals.
Documented Design Basis

Contaminated condensate recovery at 30 m³/h

30 m³/hIntegrated condensate-treatment design basis

The supplied concept document describes condensate with approximately 60 mg/L TDS, 58 NTU turbidity, 80 mg/L COD and 26 mg/L BOD. It positions spark oxidation after flotation and before photocatalytic oxidation, activated carbon and final salt removal.

The document indicates staged targets for COD and BOD reduction and final reuse as boiler-feed make-up. These values reflect that project concept and the entire treatment train, not the Spark Oxidiser alone.

Technical qualification: Spark oxidation performance, energy demand, by-products and operating cost are application-specific. YWT should confirm all performance figures through representative trials, analytical mass balance and an agreed guaranteed process train.
