Technology Position
Activated Aeration is an umbrella platform for increasing useful oxygen and oxidative activity through more than one treatment mechanism.

The appropriate mechanism depends on what limits the process. A conventional biological basin may need better oxygen transfer and circulation. A difficult organic stream may benefit from a magnetically assisted catalytic or oxidative environment. A suitable low-strength stream may use algae to generate oxygen through photosynthesis while assimilating carbon dioxide and nutrients.

These routes are not interchangeable. YWT evaluates the wastewater, oxygen demand, pollutant pathway, available light, land, hydraulic retention and operating requirements before selecting an approach.

Activated Aeration can therefore function as a conventional aeration upgrade, an algae-bacteria treatment system, a magnetically assisted activation stage or a hybrid arrangement.

Three Activated Aeration Pathways

Different mechanisms for different treatment objectives

A project may use one pathway independently or integrate two or more pathways after treatability assessment.

Pathway 01

Permanent-Magnet Assisted Activation

•OHROSO₂

Permanent magnets can form part of a magnetically assisted reaction system intended to improve contact, influence charged species or support catalytic and oxidative activation.

  • Applied to a recirculating liquid or aerated reaction zone
  • Can be combined with a catalyst, dissolved oxygen or an oxidant
  • Targets suitable dissolved organics and biological activity
  • Requires proof of radical generation and treatment benefit

Correct chemistry: the highly reactive oxidising species is the hydroxyl radical •OH. It differs from the hydroxide ion OH⁻, which mainly relates to alkalinity and pH.

Pathway 02

Algae-Assisted Oxygenation

A controlled algae-bacteria process uses photosynthesis to generate oxygen in the treatment reactor while algae assimilate carbon dioxide and selected nutrients.

  • Photosynthetic oxygen supports aerobic biological activity
  • Potential nitrogen and phosphorus uptake into biomass
  • Can reduce daytime mechanical-aeration demand
  • Produces algal biomass that must be separated and managed

Design boundary: performance varies with sunlight, temperature, reactor depth, turbidity, hydraulic retention, night operation and biomass harvesting.

Pathway 03

Engineered Gas Transfer

Blowers, diffusers, circulation and controls deliver oxygen directly into conventional activated-sludge, MBBR, IFAS or hybrid biological systems.

  • Fine- or coarse-bubble diffusion according to duty
  • Complete mixing and elimination of dead zones
  • DO, airflow or ammonia-based process control
  • Measured oxygen transfer and specific energy

Best fit: predictable oxygen demand, compact footprint, continuous operation and retrofit of existing biological plants.

Technical position on permanent magnets: A static permanent magnet should not be described as independently creating hydroxyl radicals in water. Radical generation requires a defensible reaction pathway, such as magnetically assisted catalysis or activation in the presence of oxygen or an oxidant, and must be confirmed through appropriate analytical tests.
Operating Principles

Convert energy and biological activity into useful treatment

Whichever pathway is selected, oxygen availability, reaction contact, mixing and treatment demand must remain balanced across the operating range.

01
O₂
Oxygen AvailabilityMechanical transfer, photosynthesis or reaction chemistry must supply useful oxygen at the point of demand.
02
↻
CirculationTank geometry and energy input must prevent dead zones and solids deposition.
03
•OH
Reaction PathwayRadical or catalytic claims require a defined mechanism and analytical verification.
04
BIO
Biological ContactBacteria or algae must remain in contact with substrate, nutrients and the required light or oxygen.
05

Lifecycle EnergyCompare blower power, circulation, lighting where used, harvesting and auxiliary requirements.
Engineered Aeration Assessment

From oxygen demand to controlled operation

For conventional or hybrid gas-transfer systems, YWT evaluates the entire air path and biological response before recommending equipment changes.

01Define LoadFlow, BOD, COD fractions, ammonia, temperature and peak conditions.
02Calculate DemandCarbon oxidation, nitrification, endogenous respiration and safety margin.
03Audit Air SupplyBlower flow, pressure, turndown, headers, valves and leakage.
04Map the BasinDO profile, mixing pattern, depth, dead zones and diffuser condition.
05Correct DistributionDiffuser type, density, zoning, header balance and retrievable-grid options.
06Apply ControlsDO, airflow, pressure, ammonia or load-based blower control as appropriate.
07Verify BiologyMLSS, SRT, F/M, OUR, settleability, foaming and nutrient balance.
08OptimiseConfirm effluent, specific power, stability and maintenance interval.
Core design rule: airflow alone cannot prove aeration adequacy. The system must meet the actual oxygen requirement under process conditions while maintaining complete mixing and acceptable energy use.
Engineering Basis

Standard transfer ratings must be corrected for process water

AORActual oxygen requirement from organic load, nitrogen conversion and biomass respiration.
SOTRStandard oxygen-transfer rate required after applying process-water corrections.
Alpha FactorCorrection for reduced transfer in wastewater compared with clean water.
Beta FactorCorrection for dissolved constituents affecting oxygen saturation.
TemperatureInfluences saturation, transfer, viscosity and biological reaction rate.
FoulingDiffuser ageing and scaling raise pressure and reduce effective transfer.

Conceptual Design Relationship

Required SOTR = AOR ÷ process correction

The correction includes wastewater transfer behaviour, operating DO, temperature, site elevation and diffuser ageing.

  • Confirm peak and average oxygen demand separately.
  • Check blower pressure at the actual water depth and dirty-diffuser condition.
  • Preserve mixing air or mechanical mixing during low biological demand.
  • Verify duty and standby philosophy across the full operating range.

Existing Plant Retrofit

Diagnose the cause before adding blower capacity

Common Warning Signs

  • Low DO despite blowers running near full load
  • Large DO difference across the basin
  • Rising blower discharge pressure
  • Solids deposition or septic pockets
  • High ammonia or unstable BOD removal
  • Bulking, foaming or poor settling
  • High power without matching treatment improvement
MeasureDO grid, airflow, pressure, power, OUR and relevant biological parameters.
InspectDiffusers, headers, valves, leaks, basin deposits and blower condition.
RebalanceCorrect air distribution between zones before increasing installed capacity.
UpgradeSelect diffusers, blowers, mixers or controls only after defining the bottleneck.
CommissionConduct airflow balancing, DO profiling and biological performance verification.
MonitorTrack effluent quality, pressure trend, airflow and specific energy after retrofit.
Performance Confirmation

Measured improvement defines success

DO ProfileUniformity across depth and basin zones.
Oxygen UptakeBiomass response and true process demand.
Effluent QualityBOD, COD, ammonia and suspended solids.

Specific EnergykWh per volume or load removed.
Technical qualification: Capacity increase, oxygen-transfer improvement and energy reduction depend on influent load, wastewater transfer factors, tank geometry, biomass condition, diffuser state, blower performance and the final control strategy. YWT should define guarantees only after field measurements and a complete biological-process review.
